Hi All,
Opening weekend on Vermilion was not as good as I have seen it in the past. It was however successful for me and my guest. We ended up getting our limits for the 2 days and I followed that up with a limit on my first guide trip of the season on Monday. Most were in the 13 to 15 inch range, however we did release several Walleyes that were in the slot. I'm catching most of my fish on Lindy rigs and a minnow during the day time. I have had good luck using a slip bobber rig in the evening hours. Jigs have also produced fish for me and many other anglers. Water temps are in the mid 50's which is much warmer than this time last spring. I found some large schools of Walleyes in deep water, feeding on emerging mayfly larva. It looks like an early hatch for that part of the lake this year. I did a little Smallmouth fishing with my grandson on Sunday. We didn't throw any plastics, we just tossed spinnerbaits for a few hours. We concentrated our efforts in some of the warmer back bays, but unfortunately we didn't get much action on the Smallies or the Pike. With a succession of cold fronts moving through this week it's hard to say what the weekend will bring. I'm staying on the fish I found that were feeding on the mayfly larva. As long as the food is there, the fish will be there. Have a great week everybody and please remember to put some back.
