Fishing Report for Rainy Lake

Fishing on Rainy has really been hot with all of the warm weather we've been having. Walleyes are hitting hard in the American Narrows area. I talked to a couple of guys that landed 37 walleyes in less than 2 hours. The largest went 26". Sand Bay and Busheyhead are also producing. You also don't have to go to the popular spots. I've talked to guys that are fishing some of the more remote main lake reefs and it looks like they are all holding fish at about 25 - 35 feet. Northerns are still hitting heavy in the Rainy Lake City area. For the most part the ice is still in good shape, but the snow is gone. Check with the local bait shops or resorts before going out.

With all of the warm weather we've been having action has been very good. Walleyes are very active in the Sand Bay area and around Busheyhead Island. American Narrows is also producing walleyes in 35 feet of water. Northerns have been very active in the deeper water just east of Rainy Lake City. The best baits seem to be minnows on a glow jig. All of the ice roads are in great shape. Voyageurs National Park has opened their 7 mile ice road into Cranberry Bay. A lot of people have been fishing from their cars along the road.

We've had a lot of fronts coming through our area and as usual fishing has been hot on the back side of the highs and the front side of the lows. For Walleyes the Rainy Lake City area has been good, but Little Grindstone, American Narrows and Sand Bay have been better. Sand Bay has good numbers, but they are running a little smaller. Northerns have been hitting in front of Dove and Cranberry Bay.
